Christopher Oakley, MD
2026 Nominations: Secretary
I joined the Southern Headache Society (SHS) for the first time in 2017 and became a board member in 2019 as a future conference organizer. I began practicing headache medicine truly in my pediatric residency and then continued this in my neurology residency before joining faculty at Johns Hopkins in July 2012 where I created, and continue to direct, the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Headache Center. Ove the next several years I, along with my partners in the headache group at Johns Hopkins established our headache medicine fellowship, for which I have been the director for approximately the last 10 years. In 2020, I also became the co-director of the Johns Hopkins Adult Headache Center and have remained in that role ever since. I have also been actively involved in the advancement of headache medicine withing the American Headache Society (AHS) as the Pediatric and Adolescent SIG leadership for the last several years as well as participating in 2 different UCNS committees, including the headache examination committee for which I still hold an active appointment.
Within the SHS over the last 7-9 years, as both a board member and active society member, I have truly enjoyed working with the group and helping the society grow and persevere through the ups and downs of the pandemic. Ultimately, with changes due to the pandemic, I went from the 2021 co-organizer to the 2023 organizer. The 2021 conference was converted to a virtual conference, for which I helped along with the other board members plan and carry out successfully. Following the 2021 conference, I worked with the Education Chair, Sara Sacco, and the entire Education Committee to plan our 2023 annual meeting, which was recently held in Charlotte, North Carolina. Over the last 2 years I have continued to serve the SHS as Secretary and voting member as part of the executive SHS board. In this role, I, along with the rest of the board of directors, have continued to work to help the society grow and prosper. I have truly enjoyed the last few years and hope to have the opportunity to continue in my current role as Secretary of the SHS (I am also open to other board positions or openings as ultimately my goal is to continue to serve the society in whatever capacity they need). I have also been involved over the years with the education committee and hope to be able to continue with this role in the future.
Again, I hope that I am given the opportunity to continue to serve on the board so that I can further assist in the society’s ongoing growth and expansion while promoting and improving headache medicine education and care throughout the southern region and beyond. From attending several SHS meetings over the years and being an active member in the society, I know that the SHS has done an excellent job at this, and I know this will continue not only at the upcoming SHS annual meeting, but also in the years to come. I thank you again for your consideration and I hope to have the opportunity to continue to serve you, and the society as a whole, as a member of SHS’s Board of Directors. I look forward to seeing everyone soon in Atlanta for the upcoming conference as well as at future AHS and SHS events.
