Barbara L. Nye, MD

2026 Nominations: Member at Large

(Incumbent)

I am seeking the opportunity to continue serving on the Board of the Southern Headache Society (SHS) because I am deeply committed to advancing our shared mission: improving the quality of life for patients with headache and facial pain by promoting exceptional education for healthcare professionals across the South. Having spent my career in clinical care, education, research, and advocacy, I believe strongly in the power of regional collaboration to elevate our field and expand access to high-quality headache care.

As a Board-Certified Neurologist and UCNS Board-Certified Headache Specialist, Associate Professor of Neurology at Wake Forest School of Medicine, and Director of the Headache Fellowship at Atrium Health – Wake Forest Baptist, my professional focus has always centered on training the next generation of clinicians and improving systems of care. I have the privilege of educating medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as leading clinical research studies and quality improvement initiatives. These experiences continually reinforce the importance of organized, engaged professional communities—communities like SHS that support clinicians and promote regional expertise.

My service as Vice President of the Alliance for Headache Disorders Advocacy (AHDA) and as a current SHS Board Member has strengthened my conviction that meaningful progress requires both local and national engagement. Through advocacy efforts on Capitol Hill and within my own community, I have seen the impact that unified voices can have in expanding access to care, raising awareness, and shaping policy. I bring this experience and passion for advocacy back to SHS, with the goal of helping our organization expand its reach, visibility, and influence.

Looking ahead, I am particularly interested in contributing more deeply to SHS’s communication initiatives. I enjoy the process of planning educational activities, connecting clinicians who share a passion for headache medicine, and amplifying the work of our society. Strengthening internal and external communication—whether through educational content, member engagement, or highlighting regional expertise—can significantly advance our mission and expand our community.

My goals for the Board include:

  • Enhancing educational programming that supports clinicians at all levels and promotes best practices in headache medicine.
  • Strengthening communication channels within the society to foster connection, collaboration, and active engagement among members.
  • Expanding awareness of regional expertise to ensure that patients and providers across the South have access to the resources they need.
  • Supporting strategic advocacy efforts that complement SHS’s educational mission and elevate the importance of headache medicine.

The Southern Headache Society is uniquely positioned to make a meaningful impact on the professionals we serve and, ultimately, the patients who depend on us. I am energized by the direction of the society and eager to contribute my experience, my passion for education, and my commitment to advocacy toward its continued growth.
